2019 Coding Academy
After a tremendous success over the past four years, the organizing team of the FGCU Coding Academy is glad to announce the 2019 Coding Academy.
This year the organizers aim to introduce programming at the levels for elementary and middle school students. In the past two years, much of the programming was done using mBOT. Speakers from Arthrex Programming team have also made it a tradition to give presentations on their work since 2015. In 2015, the middle school cohort was trained primarily on coding. It involved programming with Scratch, The Kano Kit. mBOT was introduced later in 2016. The elementary and middle school programs are likely to continue the same curriculum with the middle school academy having added focus on Python.
Arthrex Inc. has been our sponsor since the very beginning. In fact, the academy is an initiative that originated at Arthrex.
Our institution has continued to support the academy in many ways over the past four years. The FGCU Advancement and Foundation plays a crucial role in engaging the institution with our sponsors such as Arthrex.
The Whitaker Center for STEM education has been of tremendous support for our academy. Our student volunteers are funded by the center.
Students will be able to assemble the mBOT, manipulate and control it using Scratch programming. This is a great way to learn programming using a fun filled coding application. mBOT is part of the middle school camp curriculum.
Elementary camp students will be able to assemble their own mini computer using the Kano kit. Once assembled they would be able to program with Scratch and learn basic coding.
A very elegant programming language that has applications in data analysis, engineering, medical imaging, 3D programming and astronomy. An introduction to Python will be offered during this academy for middle school students.
The elementary school camp (Fall 2019 Entering Grades 4,5, and 6) is scheduled for June 11th- June 13th (3-day program; 9:00AM-3:00PM). Camp fee: $125.00.
