The combined bachelor’s-master’s program in English is an accelerated program designed
specifically for students who have displayed academic excellence as undergraduate
English majors.
Qualified students will take 12 credits of graduate-level (5000-6999) courses during
the senior year. After completion of the baccalaureate degree, students will apply
to the MA in English program and, if admitted, will complete the remaining 21 credits
of graduate courses for the master’s degree in one additional year of study. This
program will allow students to move more efficiently through two degrees and thereby
jump-start professional development. Graduates from this program will be well prepared
to pursue a PhD in English or a related field; to seek a teaching position at the
post-secondary level; or to pursue any number of careers that require writing, editing,
or research skills.

within one semester of graduation from the BA program to ensure continuous enrollment
under the current catalog. Students who do not successfully complete the application
to the MA program within one semester of graduation from the BA program will be dropped
from the combined BA/MA program and would then be required to complete all 33 credit
hours to satisfy the English MA requirements. Students will be accepted into the MA
program if they have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission. Upon acceptance
into the graduate program, students will be classified as Graduate. Students will
complete an additional 21 graduate credits to satisfy the MA in English as outlined
in the catalog. Graduate credits taken while an Undergraduate will be double-counted
to reach the 33 required credits for the MA English as approved by the English MA
Coordinator.

In order to finish the combined degree in five years, students in the combined program
must complete at least 12 credits of 5000-6999 level courses in English as undergraduates

How the application process works

Candidates for the combined program will apply during the junior year. Application
materials (see above) except the GRE scores are submitted to the English MA Coordinator.
The GRE scores are submitted to Graduate Studies. The English MA Coordinator will
inform Graduate Studies of candidates, and Graduate Studies will forward GRE scores
to the English MA Coordinator.
Combined program applications are reviewed by a committee of English graduate faculty.
The English MA Coordinator is responsible for communicating with the student regarding
the committee’s decision. The English MA Coordinator will notify the Office of the
Registrar when the UGGR (UG-GR combined program) attribute needs to be added, removed,
or ended on a student record.
Students accepted into the combined program meet with the English MA Coordinator to
plan course schedules. The English MA Coordinator arranges for the student to be
registered in the approved graduate courses. Students will remain classified as Undergraduates
until the bachelor’s degree is awarded. Graduate courses applied to the undergraduate
degree must be manually entered in Degree Works as a force complete. The English MA
Coordinator will work with the academic advisor for the BA English program to manage
the force complete process.

Minimum grades for program

A minimum grade of B is required for each graduate course to be double counted. The
12 credits to be double counted are as follows: ENG 6058 Introduction to Graduate
Study in English (offered every Fall semester) plus 9 credits from the MA English
program (with prior approval of English MA Coordinator), excluding 6910 (Directed
Independent Research) designations. Students interested in becoming a teaching assistant
should take ENC 6745 Seminar in Composition Pedagogy (offered every Spring). Students
are encouraged to take ENG 6940 English Master’s Internship.
Students who begin the combined program as undergraduates but either opt not to enter
the master’s program or do not receive a B or higher in each of the graduate courses
taken as undergraduates could still earn the BA in English at the end of their senior
year, if they have completed the 120 credits required for undergraduate degree and
satisfied all other degree requirements.
