Fostering Faculty-Faculty Partnerships
The Faculty Writing Partners program pairs a faculty member from the Composition program with a faculty member who is looking to develop or revise a writing assignment. The partnership takes place over the course of two semesters, and faculty partners will earn a stipend for their participation.
OCP 3002C: Physical Oceanography
In Summer and Fall of 2019, Dr. David Fugate worked with Composition faculty member Conan Griffin to improve results on an assignment requiring students to write a report on a large-scale field study to investigate the relative hydrodynamic forces in an estuary.
The pair worked on -- among other things -- implementing a rubric and feedback system for the assignment in order to help students compose more sophisticated and professional reports.
IHS 3203: Management and Leadership in Healthcare
In Spring 2017, Dr. Pam St. Laurent sat down with Kristine Tullo to hash out ideas for improving student work in the final major writing assignment in St. Laurent’s IHS course. At the end of the semester, students in the class submit a Health Care Role Profile, which includes a research-based section. St. Laurent specifically wanted to focus on helping students improve on this research element, so the partners decided to break out that section of the larger assignment and have students submit it earlier in the semester, which left more time for St. Laurent to provide feedback and work with students before the final product was due at the end of Fall 2018.
Tullo helped design the guidelines for this assignment, worked with St. Laurent to refine the rubrics for both the new assignment and the final Health Care Role Profile, and led an in-class workshop on APA format during the semester.
"I learned a lot of new techniques with the rubric and CANVAS that will be useful in my other classes as well."
