EH&S Life Safety Inspectors and the State Fire Marshal perform regular safety and fire inspections throughout the University. During inspections we've discovered a few unsafe conditions that frequently occur. We have them listed below. Please assist us in recognizing, correcting, and preventing future recurrences.
- Obstructed Hallways and Stairwells: not to be used for refrigerators, bookshelves, chairs, boxes, tables, or storage of any type of materials to allow for safe egress.
- Extension Cords: cannot be used for permanent electrical wiring. If an extension is required, it must be the type with built-in surge arrestors and cannot be plugged into another surge protector, i.e. daisy chained.
- Electrical Cords: cannot be left lying across walkways, creating trip hazards.
- Electrical Cords: cannot have grounds broken off or have deteriorated insulation.
- Clear Pathway: must be maintained to all emergency devices, to include fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash or shower stations, electrical panels, and any type of safety switch or shunt.
- Compressed Gas Cylinders: must be properly secured.
- Flammable Products: must be stored in an approved flammable safety cabinet.
- Cabinet Top and Top Shelf Storage use in Buildings with Fire Sprinklers: nothing can be stored within 18 inches of the ceiling for any reason.
- Cabinet Top and Top Shelf Storage use in Buildings without Fire Sprinklers: nothing can be stored within 24 inches of the ceiling for any reason.
- Machinery: drill presses and grinders must be secured to the floor, and belt guards must remain on belt driven machinery, grinder ¼” wheel spacing, etc.
- Space Heaters: for building use, space heaters must have the tip-over safety feature.
- Fragrance Dispensers: such as Wallflowers and Glade plug-ins must be UL or ETL listed (found on back or bottom of device). Dispensers must be kept full of liquid fragrance.

Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) enters into various contracts with numerous outside organizations and individuals providing services. Under the terms and conditions of a contract or agreement for services, the outside entity (contractor, consultant, or vendor) must show evidence of adequate insurance coverage by submitting a Certificate of Liability Insurance (COLI). The certificate must exhibit minimum University limits of liability requirements and an endorsement naming FGCU as additionally insured for general liability. The COLI is sent to the FGCU department seeking services and a copy must also be forwarded to the FGCU EH&S department. Contact EH&S for minimum insurance requirements. The University may permit exceptions to these requirements. These minimum insurance limit requirements do no apply to university construction projects. Certificates are required to contain the following insurance information:
- An endorsement naming Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees, the University and the officers, employees, agents, and volunteers as additional insured, except for professional liability and workers' compensation insurance.
- The certificate and policy shall indicate that coverage's afforded under the policy will not be cancelled, modified, changed, or expire before 30 days prior written notice has been given to the University.
- The insurance underwriter must be rated at "A" or better by A.M. Best Company.

How to Acquire Camp Insurance
Camp insurance is available to University departments having day or overnight sport and educational camps.
This camp insurance is a supplemental insurance program offered through state contract insurance vendor Public Risk Insurance Advisors (PRIA) Insurance Agency, underwritten by ACE American Insurance Company. It is designed for participants in sport and educational camps in need of insurance coverage for injuries and/or illness sustained during the camp - on or off campus. Camp Administrator has the primary responsibility of applying and paying for coverage as well as contacting the Assistant Director of EH&S within 24 hours of accident or illness. Camp Administrator must ensure that medical release forms are complete. Camp Administrator must immediately notify EH&S of updates to camp roster.
Environmental Health and Safety has the primary responsibility of offering this supplemental insurance for sport and educational camps held by Florida Gulf Coast University.
Purchasing procedures for obtaining coverage for camps
- Review plan options and submit completed on-line application and first draft of roster. These documents will be stored in the EH&S server. We ask that you submit your camp's application and roster,at least, seven business days before the camp start date.
- Please note: your invoice will be based upon your estimated number of participants, if the number of participants increases, please let us know immediately.
- Ensure medical release forms are complete and signed by parent or legal guardian of camper. Medical release forms are to be kept secure by the coach, faculty, or staff person that is responsible for camp.
- Your invoice will be e-mail to you by the insurance company, so please pay invoice upon receipt. For FGCU Procurement and Accounts Payable purposes, the University ID No. is 814913030.
Purchasing either recommended insurance plan listed below will cover participants 100% for camp related injuries, other than policy-excluded items.
Primary with sickness- Plan C
