Florida Gulf Coast University is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our Mathletes. We have shifted FGCU Mathletes Summer Camp to virtual format in Summer 2021.

Welcome to the FGCU Mathletes Summer Camp home page, a program designed for bright and talented middle school students interested in investigating concepts in mathematics that are not usually introduced at the middle school level. The setup of the program will provide an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment for middle school students to develop and retain interest in mathematics and science learning.

The program offers two weeks of a mix of lessons, virtual simulations and fun activities designed to maximize learning through hands-on instruction with Mrs. Tanya Huffman, Mathematics Instructor, and Dr. Menaka Navaratna, Chair of Mathematics Department.

2021 Mathletes Summer Camp Sessions

General Information about two Sessions

SESSION: Imagineering with Functions

Monday, July 19 – Friday, July 23  (9 am - 12 pm)

During this week Mathletes Co-Directors will guide students as they investigate how linear, quadratic and exponential functions used to engineer, model and analyze real-world phenomena. Students will learn how to interpret graphs, which are used for everyday purposes as well as engineering analysis.  Students will explore how linear data and regression line can be used to approximate an exact relationship between variables that are related in a linear fashion. Students will learn about hydraulic systems and build a hydraulic arm/lift using syringes, tubing and water to create a hydraulic system. Students will also learn the concept of Hooke's law and how it relates to many interesting applications of mechanical engineering. Lastly, students will explore projectile motion, collect data and write a quadratic equation of a catapult’s trajectory.

SESSION: Making Waves with Mathematics

Monday, July 26 – Friday, July 30  (9 AM - 12 PM)

This session will continue the hands-on introduction to function modeling. Nikola Tesla famously said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Mathletes Co-Directors will demonstrate mathematics behind sounds, whether from talking, music, an earthquake, a fire or a sonic boom. Students will learn about the types of waves and how they change direction, as well as basic wave properties such as wavelength, frequency, amplitude and speed. Students will learn the basic principles of filtering as well as how to apply digital filters to extract part of an audio signal by using an interactive online demo website. Students will examine the motion of pendulums and will design simple yet accurate timing devices using limited supplies.
