When The Hertz Corp. moved into its new corporate headquarters in Estero, Fla., in 2015, the American car-rental giant became a close and welcome neighbor to Florida Gulf Coast University, located about 6 miles away. A mutually beneficial relationship has gained momentum in the years since then.
“Hertz partnered passively when we moved to the area, hiring a lot of different FGCU alumni within different departments,” according to Hertz campus recruiter James E. Green III.
Over time, the company’s collaboration with Career Development Services expanded, he says. “We went from attending the annual career fair, to facilitating building tours for different FGCU faculty (deans, professors and career services reps), to having faculty members speak to different Hertz employees within the building.”
Hertz having close proximity to FGCU made it easier for the company to see the opportunities on campus and appreciate the potential of the students. “This also gives alumni an opportunity to bridge the gap between Hertz and the university,” James says.
There are many examples where interns at Hertz headquarters have stayed on part time after their summer experiences, even remaining on board until the following summer, he says. This process has led to interns who come back year-to-year and interns who are eventually hired full time.
Hertz’s industry requires that employees have career experience so they can jump right into the work, James says. “It’s difficult to recruit for entry-level positions here. The internship opportunities allow us to see how well a college student can take on a lot of these responsibilities, ensuring us the chance to hire only candidates who will not struggle with our demanding workloads.”
As a testament of Hertz’s commitment to and ongoing relationship with FGCU, he said that this year alone the company has hired 65 students or graduates in internships, part-time positions and full-time operations.
